ACETONEMIA SYNDROME IN CHILDREN. TREATMENT WITH HOMEOPATHY
In recent years, almost every second child suffers from acetonemia syndrome, making it a very pressing issue for parents. Normally, ketone bodies (acetone and acetoacetic acid) are not detected in urine. Their presence indicates disturbances in fat and carbohydrate metabolism. Acetone in urine can be a symptom of serious diseases such as diabetes, but it can also be a consequence of intoxication, starvation, traumatic brain injury, poor diet (high levels of fatty, fried, and sweet foods), nervous breakdowns, psychological trauma, and even appendicitis.
Most often, an acetone crisis begins suddenly with bouts of severe vomiting and a sharp rise in temperature. The main treatment is drinking plenty of fluids. Excess acetone irritates the vomiting center, so fluid intake is not always effective. In this case, either intravenous fluids are administered or an antiemetic (such as Cerucal) is administered, followed by further fluid intake. It is advisable to treat children with raisin infusion, dried fruit decoction (high-quality, of course), or apple compote. These decoctions can be alternated with still mineral water (such as Borjomi or Polyana Kvasova) or a packet of rehydron per 1 liter of boiled, cooled (!) water. Ideally, your baby should drink a daily fluid intake equivalent to 120 ml per kg of body weight. If your child's condition worsens, take them to the hospital immediately! You can test for acetone in urine at home using tests available at any pharmacy.
Homeopathic remedies are also used to help your child recover from this serious condition.
The main medications used for intoxication are:
Arsenicum album
The disease progresses very quickly to prostration. Exhaustion, weakness, and waning strength. Lethargy, panic, worsening between midnight and 2 a.m. Drinks frequently, but in small amounts. If he drinks even a little more, he vomits violently. He cannot eat or drink because he feels extremely nauseous. Burning pains, unquenchable thirst in small sips. All kinds of poisoning. Sepsis.
Acetic acidum
Nux vomica
Worsening 1-2 hours after eating, or most often in the morning at 9 a.m. Sour, bitter belching, heartburn, nausea with vomiting.
Homeopathic Insulinum
Can all cases of acetonuria be cured with these 4 remedies? Of course not, but many can. If the remedy is chosen correctly, improvement should occur quickly, within an hour. If no improvement occurs, the remedy is incorrect.
These case examples illustrate how effective homeopathic remedies can be.
Case 1
A 1.5-year-old child with a fever of 38.5°C (100.5°F), unresponsive to antipyretics. Vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and extreme weakness developed very quickly. The child's condition worsened significantly around 12:00 a.m. The child became prostrate. The child was thirsty, but if she took more than a sip, she would vomit. After calling the parents, I advised them to immediately call an ambulance and went myself. We arrived at the child's home at the same time. Arsenicum Album 30C (5 granules dissolved in water) was immediately administered. The ambulance recommended immediate hospitalization. While the parents were preparing the child for the hospital, her condition was severely limited; she became active, and her temperature dropped to 37°C (100.5°F). She began drinking freely and began urinating. After observing the child for half an hour, the ambulance stopped insisting on hospitalization. The child stayed home and slept peacefully until morning. The family doctor was called in the morning, and her condition was normal.
Second Case
A 3.5-year-old child. Acute condition: frequent vomiting, diarrhea, fainting. The parents suspect poisoning. The face was pale, edematous, and waxy. Symptoms worsened very quickly. Two doses of Arsenicum album were ineffective. Aceticum acidum 30C was prescribed. The child became more active, and his condition improved. The parents tested the acetone content in the urine, which was found to be high. Homeopathic Insulinum 6C was additionally prescribed (Acetonuria section of the Universal Repertory edited by A.A. Chernykh and S.P. Pesonina) (four remedies, including Insulinum to a large extent). The child's condition quickly returned to normal. Insulinum was given for two more days. Aceticum acidum was repeated once a week, three times.
The parents noticed that after taking the medication, the child's previous allergies to fruits and vegetables disappeared.
Therefore, for the treatment of acute poisoning, especially in young children, homeopathic Insulinum can be added as a complementary remedy to well-known remedies such as Arsenicum album, Aceticum acidum, and Nux vomica. Pancreas can also be added, as the pancreas is often affected in such cases.
If drastic measures are not taken to eliminate the causes and consequences of acetonemia syndrome, by the age of eight to ten, the child will develop a whole host of severe chronic gastrointestinal pathologies. If acetonemia syndrome occurs as an isolated incident, it is not particularly serious. However, when the syndrome recurs repeatedly, its complications can have serious consequences for the body. These can manifest themselves in adolescence as diabetes, ulcers, gastritis, cholecystitis, and so on. Therefore, after your child has recovered from the crisis, be sure to consult a homeopath who can normalize your child's metabolism.
